They flew first class to New York, but Kiara was in no state to appreciate her first luxury flight. She’d have preferred to fly economy on her own.

At the airport she took the small case she’d arrived with and left for the bus stop before they could offer her a lift into town.

Once she got to the apartment she shared with an old college friend, she could finally let herself go.

She hadn’t known she could cry so hard and for so long. What the fuck had she done? Although she knew, deep inside, that she was right, that didn’t stop it hurting. So badly she knew the memory of what she’d walk away from would remain a scar on her soul.

But with Monday came a determination that she’d lost somewhere along the line. She wouldn’t look back, only forward.

Dressed in a fresh suit, her laptop bag containing a list of contacts and potential networking opportunities, Kiara left to catch her bus to work. She’d called the assistant who’d covered for her while she’d been away, and they were meeting first thing to discuss taking the company further.

She had a little capital now. Daniel had insisted on paying her full contract, even though she’d only stayed two weeks, so she had that tucked away in the bank.

Full of plans and enthusiasm, Kiara left the subway and paused at a sandwich shop to buy lunch and a coffee to go. She’d work straight through today.

Besides, she had no desire to return to an empty apartment, occupied by a friend who spent most nights at her new boyfriend’s place. She’d work herself exhausted, go home and sleep, wake and come back into work.

Eventually her wounds would heal, or at least hurt less.

She had a tiny, rented office downtown, where property was more expensive than gold dust, but she’d struck lucky, getting a foothold in a larger block. The owners preferred to rent to big concerns, but a smaller booth at street level had defaulted on their payments. Rather than show a blank, boarded-over façade to the world, they’d sublet the place to Kiara.

If she didn’t earn money soon, she’d have to move, and then she’d lose her precious Manhattan foothold. Her struggle would take longer and have less chance of success. She needed to push now.

Full of resolutions and good intentions, she strode into her office. Two steps later and she sat behind her desk.

Fifteen minutes later and her assistant arrived. “Hey, you’re back!”

Surprise etched Jody’s features as she dumped her capacious bag behind her desk.

Kiara had practiced this part. “It turned out they only needed me for one job and I did that faster than they thought I would. They paid me for the month, though.”

“Cool.”

Jody squeezed behind her own miniscule desk. They left all the space they could for the clients, which wasn’t much.

If anyone asked, Kiara said brightly, “Oh we prefer to save our capital for the more important parts, like ensuring you have the right staff at the right time.
